So, you think you want a coach to help you as you begin a new job…
Lily: Yes, I’m about to begin a new job. I’m not sure I have all the skills I need and don’t want to start out on the wrong foot.
Coach: Good for you, pausing before jumping into the new role. My observation is that the first day, first week, first month can set the stage for success.
Do you understand what I’m talking about?
Lily: I kind of see that you mean; how people see me interacting, starting my role and my first steps matter.
Coach: Exactly. So, what do you think would be a great way to begin?
Lily: Well, talking to peers and my manager? Listening to their views on the job and the challenges they face.
Coach: Excellent – you don’t have all the answers. Asking questions, listening to multiple perspectives, getting a feel for the people, how they interact, watching people in meetings. These are ways to become grounded in the team, the culture in the near environment and what role you will be able to play within this group.
It’s important for you to understand the work that is going great, the work that isn’t succeeding and what people in the team would do to make changes, if given a chance.
Preparing questions to ask is a great way to start. You might ask your manager, “what would I need to deliver in the next six months to make you say awesome”? It’s important that you know what success means in actually work delivery. Being busy isn’t the same as being successful.
Lily: Once I ask the questions, listen and learn, what’s the next step?
Coach: What do you think makes sense to do once you are grounded in the problems, successes and people?
Lily: Getting people together to prioritize the important issues. Being clear that what is going well has to keep succeeding even while we fix the problems and getting everyone to think about the best way to move forward as a group.
Coach: Now you’re on a strong path to pulling a team together to focus attention on solving problems and doing this by getting the buy-in through the effort of having the team collect their thoughts and preferred actions to move forward.
It’s time for you to begin your new career journey!
